How To Keep Children Safe From Omicron

The omicron variant of Covid- 19 has once again induced panic among people, especially among parents. Due to the surge in cases of omicron and the unavailability of vaccines for kids below 5 years in the USA parents have every reason to feel the panic. This third wave of Coronavirus or omicron virus is highly infectious and can spread out very fast. It is the most infectious virus we have seen since measles with rates doubling every 48 to 72 hours. While the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced the first US case of the Omicron Variant on December 1, 2021, it has now taken hold as the dominant strain in the country, already accounting for about 95 percent of total COVID-19 cases as of January 1, 2022.

A visiting child pediatrician whose specialization is on infectious disease, in a reputed Montessori in Monrovia, CA,  tells that there is no doubt that this latest Corona Strain will impact kids too though these infections are typically milder in kids and babies. According to the American Academy of Paediatrics (AAP)by December, almost 7.9 million children have tested positive.

This third wave of Covid or omicron virus is a totally new thing so no child specialist can tell you with confidence how it will affect your child or what will be the exact medicine for the disease. According to them some possible, most common symptoms as they have seen so far are fever, cough, tiredness, and loss of taste or smell. Less common symptoms are sore throat, headache, body aches, pains, diarrhea, skin rash, etc. And the serious symptoms include difficulty breathing or shortness of breath, loss of speech, and chest pain.

In a reputed Montessori in Monrovia, CA, parents are advised to keep children safe and calm. Be sure that your kids are maintaining the basic Covid-19 protocol like masking, maintaining physical distancing, and hand sanitization. Tell them not to touch the eyes, nose, and mouth after coming from outside. Disinfect the home, especially the floor as many times as possible. If your child is more than five years old, get your child vaccinated as early as possible. Avoid attending social gatherings and parties with your children. If you or any of your family members have symptoms of omicron, isolate yourself from the child. Disinfect frequently touched surfaces such as faucets, kitchen countertops, furniture, doorknobs, and handles.

Despite taking all precautions, if your child shows symptoms, promptly attend pediatrician and arrange for Covid testing promptly. Unnecessarily delay may worsen the situation. A well-balanced protein-rich diet that contains all the essential nutrients should be given to the children for their speedy recovery.

CDC is advising parents who have children from 5- 11 years to bring their kids to vaccination centers to remain protected from COVID. Some parents fear that these vaccines may have side effects and get afraid they are delaying the vaccination. But, CDC data published in December reaffirmed that Pfizer and other COVID-19 vaccines cause mostly mild, brief side effects in children. Millions of young kids have now received their shot and serious adverse events were rarely reported.
